Tay Ping Hui ties the knot

SINGAPORE: Singapore actor Tay Ping Hui bade goodbye to bachelorhood, marrying long-time girlfriend university lecturer Edna Lim last Friday, reported xinmsn.com.

The actor, who turns 40 this year, revealed that he had proposed to Lim, 39, last year and planned to marry her after the Singapore General Election, which he expected to be held in May this year.

But May came and went without any news on the election, so Tay decided to go ahead with the wedding.

"I couldn't wait any longer for our country's big event so I just tied the knot," he said with a laugh.

"I got married on Friday and went through all the traditional marriage rites like fetching the bride, registering our marriage and the wedding banquet on the same day," Tay told xinmsn.com, before adding that fetching his bride was the hardest part.

Tay and three of his buddies were made to do 168 push-ups within a minute, down punishing beverages such as drinks laced with chilli padi and even give out what he estimated to be a "four-figure sum" in red packets before he was allowed claim his bride.

"I am not even sure exactly how much it was. All I know is I kept giving out these stacks of S$50 bills!" he said.

The Wedding

The couple's wedding banquet, held at the five-star Capella Singapore hotel at Sentosa, was planned by Tay and a group of buddies.

Out of the 35 tables at the banquet, only one was reserved for his close friends in the media.

The entire cost of the banquet, estimated to be a five-figure sum, was borne by Tay as he refused to accept any sponsorship deals.

"The guests I invited are really close friends of mine. We really know each other and are on very good terms. It is not like doing a show. As for artistes, I only invited those with whom I have close ties with," he explained.

Future Plans

The couple recently rented a colonial-era residence as their nuptial home and is in the midst of moving in.

Tay revealed that he eventually wants to buy a home on Sentosa when the property market cools down but pointed out that he will "still visit his parents often".

As for children, five would be the ideal number.

"Enough to form a basketball team," said the actor, but not before he and his missus get to enjoy life as a married couple for "one or two years".

The couple plans to honeymoon in Europe at the end of the year, after Tay completes work on his upcoming Mandarin drama "The Family Court".
