Singer Misia to tour Asia

Singer Misia, 29, will embark on an Asian tour from Sept 13. She will tour Singapore, Shanghai, Seoul and Hong Kong.
Misia told Sports Nippon newspaper that she would like to bring people in Asia together through the tour and wanted to promote environmental protection activities for kids in these countries.

Kelly Chen arrives but her baggage doesn't

Hong Kong singer-actress Kelly Chen, 35, attended an event in Tokyo on Monday to introduce Hong Kong’s satellite broadcasting service MATV Movie Asia, but had to show up in casual clothes because her baggage was lost at Narita Airport.
Chen apologized at the event, saying, "I brought something dressy to wear, but my baggage didn’t turn up at the airport."
MATV has been operating in Japan since March on SkyPerfect TV. The company said all programs will have Japanese subtitles and it will create original content for Japan as well.

Amuro Namie to Perform for Avex Shareholders

J-pop princess Amuro Namie (30) is to perform at the upcoming concert for shareholders of major record label Avex. The June 22 show at the Saitama Super Arena is described as the biggest ever by the company, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. In fact, with Sony's event being attended by about 7,300 people, the 20,000-seat arena show is probably the biggest by any music company. Held each year after the annual shareholder's meeting, the event was held at the Tokyo International Forum for the last seven years. It usually features the label's top stars, such as Hamasaki Ayumi (29), Koda Kumi (25), and Otsuka Ai (25). But Koda has had a bit of a difficult year and Hamasaki has the Osaka show of her national tour on the same night. So Amuro has stepped in to headline the show. It's her first appearance in eight years and she is long past the heyday of her popularity when she was the first singer to be dubbed a "pop princess" in her teens. But she had some success with a recent single, has a greatest hits album coming out on July 30, and a 15-arena tour starting on October 25.

K-Pop Industry Undergoing Slump

Korean pop music may be as popular as ever, but popularity does not translate into record sales. The K-pop music industry continues to struggle with the decline in album sales over the past seven years. The year 2007 was no different. Based on the data of the Recording Industry Association of Korea, R&B group SG Wannabe's fourth album ``Arirang'' was the best-selling album of 2007. However, it only sold a total of 190,998 copies, as compared to SG Wannabe's previous hit albums in 2006 (341,642 albums sold) and 2005 (414,855 albums sold). Even more distressing for the K-pop music industry, only albums by SG Wannabe, Super Junior and Epik High managed to surpass the 100,000 sales mark. Super Junior, a wildly popular idol group, sold 164,058 copies of its second album ``Don't Don,'' while hip-hop stars Epik High sold 120,301 copies of its album ``Remapping the Human Soul.'' Other best-selling artists include Shinhwa member Shin Hye-sung, Seeya, F.T. Island, M.C. The Max and Toy. Surprisingly, the Wonder Girls debut album, which includes their hit song ``Tell Me,'' only sold 47,927 copies (ranked 15th best selling album). K-pop hit its peak in 2000, when hit albums from Jo Sung-mo, g.o.d. and Seo Taiji sold more than a million records each. Jo's album, which topped the sales charts in 2000, sold 1.98 million copies. In the following years, album sales have faltered, mainly due to the popularity of digital music. More people prefer purchasing and downloading digital music on to their computers or mobile phones, instead of buying the actual CD. The last time an album sold more than 1 million records was in 2001. Foreign music album sales also experienced a decline in 2007. The best-selling foreign album is the soundtrack to the hit film ``Once,'' selling 36,725 copies. Other popular foreign acts include Paul Potts, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Yongjae O'Neill and Maroon 5. Sales of Japanese albums have barely made an impact, as only Japanese idol group Arashi and hip-hop duo M-flo ranked in the top 50 best-selling foreign albums in 2007.

Rain May Sing Olympic Theme

Singer Rain may sing the theme song for this year's Beijing Olympics.
He recently received a request from the Olympic organizing committee and is positively reviewing it.
He was asked to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Doha Asian Games but had to turn down the offer due to his tour schedule.
He has finished filming the Hollywood flick 'Speed Racer' set to open in May and is gearing up for a major Hollywood debut. Former boy band GOD member Park Jun-hyeong also appears in the film.

Star TV in the Philippines Interview with Lollipop 棒棒堂 & Lunch

Star TV for its annual Star Conference, some 300 guests that include members of the press from the Asean countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia) and advertisers and cable affiliates in the region.
The conference this year had senior executives from across Star’s network presenting upcoming highlights from around the region. The speakers included Todd Lituchy, president, entertainment, Star; Keertan Adyanthaya, executive vice president and general manager, Star Plus; Prem Kamath, vice president of marketing, Star India; Jason Siu, general manager, Star Taiwan; James Hung, director, Star Chinese Channel; and Andy Chang, program and production director, Channel [V] Taiwan.
The gathering is meant to be a venue for Star TV to share with its guests and affiliates “the company’s direction and its strength in bringing quality content to its over 300 million strong viewership in Asia and beyond.”
“Star is a content company and we are committed to making compelling, relevant content that resonates with viewers across the region. With over 60 channels in 10 languages across a number of genres, no other media company can provide consumers with so many choices,” said Paul Aiello, chief executive of Star.
Laureen Ong, chief operating officer of Star, said, “Star is international and Star is local. While we bring the best of Hollywood on Star Movies, we also showcase Bollywood hits on Star Gold and Chollywood on Star Chinese Movies and Star Chinese Movies 2. While Star World viewers enjoy Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader, our self-produced Hindi version Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hain has been wowing audiences on Star Plus. And while we have an international version of Channel [V], we also broadcast a Hindi, Thai, Taiwanese and mainland Chinese version.” The conference speakers resonated with claims that Star Movies is the no.1 English movie channel in Malaysia, Singapore, India and Taiwan. The channel, we were told, will premiere a number of exciting blockbuster movies this year such as Rocky Balboa, Die Hard marathon (including Die Hard 4.0), The Simpsons Movie, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Enchanted and The Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy (2008 Year-End Special). Also, viewers will get to go behind the scenes on Star Movies VIP Access for the latest blockbusters including Get Smart, Wall-e and The Dark Knight, just to name a few. Other upcoming movie titles on Star Movies include The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, AVP: Requiem, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, 27 Dresses, Michael Clayton, Meet the Spartans and more.
Star World viewers can also expect new and upcoming programs including the no. 1 game show The Moment of Truth, Emmy winner Jimmy Kimmell in Jimmy Kimmell Live, Lipstick Jungle (based on the best-selling book by Candace Bushnell of Sex & the City) and Knight Rider—a two-hour movie event based on the iconic 1980s hit TV series.

Focus on the Philippines
While Star TV is claiming leadership in India and other Asian countries, it can’t say the same for the Philippines.
In an informal meeting with the regional members of the press at the coffee shop of Ritz-Carlton Millennia (where most of us had been booked for the duration of the conference), Laureen Ong acknowledged that Star still has so much to do in the Philippines to make its presence more significant.
“We’re looking at how we can focus more on the Philippines with programs on Star World, Star Movies, and Channel [V] in light of the presence of other content providers in your country,” she said.
Star TV, particularly Star World, is facing tough competition from local content providers like Solar TV group and ABS-CBN with their own cable channels like Lifestyle, Velvet, Maxx, not to mention Studio 23, the free-to-air UHF channel that broadcasts a lot of programs that are also seen on Star World.
Ong said that Star has taken a more aggressive stance with respect to program acquisitions. “We’re pressing for exclusivity, and that should make the difference,” she said.
Meanwhile, Star TV has to share properties with both Solar TV and Studio 23 and other SkyCable-operated channels.
“It’s going to take a little while,” Ong admitted, “but we’re not giving up too easily. We will get there.”
Ong seemed well informed on the present state of cable operations in the Philippines, with SkyCable as the dominant carrier. “We will just have to deal with them as they are also our affiliates,” she said.
On the issue of Channel [V] seemingly losing viewership in the Philippines after SkyCable and other operators dropped it from its basic lineup of channels, Ong said that Star TV is trying to look at how it can bring the music video channel back on track. “We are quite big in Taiwan [and other Asian countries] and we are sure we can address the Philippine audience as well.”
Currently, Channel [V] is only available to SkyCable’s platinum subscribers.
Gala reception
The conference culminated in a gala reception at the Ritz-Carlton Millennia’s opulent ballroom (which earlier during the day was the venue for the conference that had wall-to-wall video screen with seamless projection).
The guests were treated to an elaborate five-course dinner, and entertainment provided for by the rising Taiwanese boy-band Lollipop had everyone in the audience gawking as the six nice-looking boys did a couple of sing-and-dance routines.
A homegrown (meaning Singaporean) comedienne took to the stage after. She was a big hit among the crowd familiar to her brand of humor, as she made fun of the quirks of Singaporeans, Indians, and Malays.
But, it was Anita Sarawak, considered as Singapore’s performing diva, who had everyone mesmerized. Her booming contralto was enough to attract everyone to the center of the stage. Sarawak spiced her performance with a bit of comedy, and she was very good with the audience, in fact discovering for herself that Juno Henares who was in the audience representing SkyCable was also a singer.
Lollipop for lunch After breakfast and shortly after lunch the day of the conference, we met Lollipop, the group formed in August 2006, on Channel [V] Taiwan’s brand-new variety show called Lollipop. Hosted by renowned Taiwanese singer-songwriter Fan Fan (Fan Wei Chi), the series introduced viewers to a group of multitalented, energetic youths. The show was an instant hit and Lollipop’s regular cast became famous for their freewheeling brand of humor and up-for-anything sense of fun. Among Taiwan’s teens, the Lollipop boys were instant celebrities.
Weeks after its launch, the show began a talent quest to find a “Lollipop” boy band. After a series of elimination rounds, the final six members were confirmed in November 2006.
We met Owodog, Prince, Brian (Liljay), Fabien, William and Awei who, according to their handlers, had undergone a 100-day training program before they were officially made public. Then they released several hit EPs, such as “Colorful Lollipop” and “Summer’s First Experience.”
In July 2007, the boys starred in their first-ever TV series, Black Sugar Macchiato. With their rising popularity and well-honed talents, the boys released their debut album Lollipop in December 2007. To support the album’s release, the group held their first concert in January 2008 at Taipei Arena, Taipei’s leading concert venue.
Unfortunately, the group hasn’t heard much about the Philippines, and neither we have heard anything about them.
I was surprised that there’s such a group called Lollipop. I asked Owodog, the oldest in the group why they are called as such, he said in Chinese that was later translated for us by the group’s official interpreter, “Because we are young and sweet, like Lollipop.” The answer sent everyone bursting into laughter. So did the boys who later said they hope to visit Manila sometime.
They said they are familiar with F4 and how they became popular around the world, and also Farenheit, the group that is now considered the hottest in Taiwan.
“We’d like to follow in their footsteps,” Prince said, and Fabien added, “only better.” Owodog, William, and Awei chuckled and said, “Oh, joke only!”

The highly anticipated Girls' Generation and the Wonder Girls 4th of July special stages finally aired and of course ALLKPOP has them up for your viewing pleasure!Girls' Generation performed the Wonder Girls hit "Tell Me," seriously putting the Wonder Girls to shame. Jay Chou Loses $20,000 In Casino

Jay Chou (周杰倫) held a concert at The Venetian Macao last night.Although, during the concert at the casino resort, Jay told his fans not to gamble, afterwards, in an interview, he admitted that he did gamble and had lost HK$20,000.Onstage he said: "My mum told me not to go to casinos because you'll lose a lot of money. I only came to this casino to see you all."He asked rhetorically: "Did you come to watch my show or to gamble?"His fans shouted back: "To watch your show!"Security at the concert was tight. Food and glow-sticks were prohibited, and members of the audience had their bags searched on entry.Some fans managed to smuggle glow-sticks in, and Jay, in an act of defiance, asked them to throw these onto the stage so he could use these as drumsticks.Jay's mother and grandmother attended. The "scandal" singers (Double J) thus appeared on stage together in a "different" way, and, together with the witty, comedic dialogue, raised the excitement and "atmosphere" of the audience.The Golden Melody Awards ceremony typically garners a lot of attention and interest; this year, in addition to the comedic opening routine, the four hosts also imitated the Beatles, performing a purposely weird and exaggerated version of 歡樂年華 [Huan Le Nian Hua] [Age of Happiness].The first performer of the evening was pop diva A-mei Chang HuiMei. Comprising Owodog (26), Lil Jay (22), A-Wei (23), Fabien (23), Prince (19) and William (23), these singing, dancing, acting and hosting talents were first put together by CHANNEL [V] through its reality show of the same title. But the Lollipops are quick to dismiss that they are the next F4. "We are not like F4," the boys say in an interview in Singapore. "They are much taller and better looking than us. We don't set out to be teen idols. We just want to be ourselves."Tough luck, guys. You are already the new teen idols in this part of the world. Vic Zhou (Zai Zai) gave speech as UNICEF ambassador at Beijing Sichuan

“First of all I 'd like to say hi to all present.All the friends from the press and the entrepreneurs from "Sunrider", good afternoon, I am Zaizai, Zhou Yumin. Today, it is my great honor to represent the UNICEF to attend this ceremony. I believe, since the moment that tragic disaster occurred and even months after that, the earth quake in Sichuan Province has shocked not only me myself but everyone. The constant media reports about the earth quake must have made everyone including me deeply sorrowful . However ,what I felt comforted is that we Chinese are very united towards the disaster. Ever afterwards, I see the national unity ,I see the power of people ,and I see the love of people, and what is more, the will of firmness and persistence towards the disaster. Everyone who works for the UNICEF is demonstrating these good spirits by their work, I think take our friendly - ambassador Jacky Chen, brother Jacky, for example, he came to Sichuan himself to send them love and caring. As for me, I will also appeal to people all around the world to give out a hand to help the victims of the earthquake in Sichuan. The destruction is Sichuan is very severe ,which is clear to all and need not to be further stressed by me ,we should work hard and in good wish that we wil make some difference to their lives and raise enough fund for the re-construction. The most important purpose of my trip here today is to tell you all that the re-construction program is not a easy task, it is already a tough job for the infrastructure re-construction, not mentioning the re-construction of the whole city. However, as for us UNICEF, we care more about the kids, and how to maintain their healthy psychological status long after the earthquake is always on our mind . This is important yet easy to be ignored, people may concentrate on the re-construction of the city. What I conceive is that it is a life-long project to help maintain those kids psychologically healthy. At the point, I ‘d like to give my sincere thanks to “Sunrider” for what it has contributed to Sichuan, we, the UNICEF, will make good use of the money to build the kids in the earthquake area a better place for both physical and psychological recovery. Months and even years after, we will pay constant carings and attentions to these kids. We will also give them some toys and stationeries ,I think this is for the purpose to help them release their sorrowness by painting and hope this may relieve them a short while from all the horrible memories. We hope to let them know that there are many kind-hearted people care about them out there in this world, they are not alone. It is a long –term mission for the re-construction, I ‘d like to thank the “Sunrider” company again for all their efforts and contributions, and also hope all that present can tell your friends around , and pass on our love message. Let’s constantly give out our love and helping hands to the victims from Sichuan, thank you all !”- End of Speech –
